With each shift in season our bodies need to acclimatise and our needs will change.
After a long, dark winter there are ways we can help it to adjust.
Keep taking vitamin D
The suns rays are not strong enough to provide your body with it yet. When your shadow becomes shorter than you you stand a good chance of absorbing it. If you have darker skin, various health conditions, spend a lot of time in indoors ,have a genetic SNP which means you can't absorb it or trying to become pregnant then please take it all year round. There are tests available and I can direct/help you with this is required and check you have the correct dose for you.
Our skins will feel drier at this time of year
Central heating and the wind, rain and cold will dry our skins out.
Remember to moisturise daily and choose products that are paraben free and sls free. Good brands to choose are moogoo or cerave. Smooth the moisturiser on to allow it to soak into the skin.
Omega 3 rich foods will give your skin a boost such as oily fish. Two to three portions per week and choose the smaller fish or fillets as they will have less impurities such as micro plastics. Also chia seeds ,walnuts and flaxseeds are omega 3 rich.
Hydrate by drinking lots of water, herb teas or smoothies. Caffeine can dehydrate you so look for alternative options. Add berries , fruits or herbs to water to make it more interesting.
Focus on seasonal produce such as asparagus, rhubarb, purple sprouting brocolli, watercress, leeks, chicory, radishes, beetroot and cabbage to boost these anti oxidants.
Shift your appetite from heartier meals
Eat seasonal produce and concentrate on lighter foods to prepare our bodies for spring.
Stir frys full of seasonal vegetables , steamed vegetables and fish or grass fed meat with roasted vegetables and herbs can help this adjustment. Including a wide variety of vegetables will also increase our fibre intake. Ideally we are aiming for 30g fibre per day per adult . This will feed our microbiome(friendly bacteria) and improve our digestion. A regular bowel movement each day gets rid of our waste products and improves our hormone balancing and immunity.
Also by venturing outside more and doing gardening this has a positive impact on our microbiome and mood .As little as half an hour a day of sunshine gives us so many health benefits.
